This month, I volunteered at Heroes360 Club of New Orleans in Algiers. Each semester, a different cohort is in the club, so the new cohort started this week. We worked on communication exercises yesterday and applied that to how communication could be beneficial or detrimental in a professional/work environment. This also gave the students a chance to get to know each other better and become more comfortable with one another because a few of the students go to different schools.
I really love working with this organization because the staff are so friendly and welcoming and I get to watch the students gain more confidence in themselves as individuals as they prepare for the future, whether it's work or post-secondary school. I also love getting to know the students and teach them (or at least try to) what I can along with giving them a shoulder to lean on if they need. The program gives these kids opportunities to tap into their creativity as well, whether it's 3D printing, podcasts, gaming, textile crafts, or culinary arts.
So far, I've really enjoyed the Neuro module that we're currently in. I really like getting to learn about Parkinson's, the different types of strokes, and Alzheimer's disease. I've also had a lot of fun in our Neuropharmacology class and getting to learn about different drugs and backgrounds in a peer-led way, especially with the discussion that we have after the presentation.
